Pandemia leva a quebra de 80% nas apostas desportivas
As operadoras de jogo online esperam que nesta segunda metade do ano, já com as atividades desportivas em pleno, as apostas voltem a ganhar novo fôlego.
Os primeiros seis meses do ano foram desastrosos para as casas de apostas desportivas online a operar no mercado português. A Bet, a Placard e a Betano admitem uma quebra de 80% no volume de apostas, e a Nossa Aposta aponta para um decréscimo de 60% devido à quase total suspensão das competições desportivas a nível mundial fruto da pandemia do novo coronavírus. O inesperado surto pandémico transformou-se num travão para as operadoras, que previam para este ano um crescimento entre 10% e 15% na atividade.
Para a Bet, que estimava um incremento do negócio em linha com as expectativas do setor, "foi um primeiro semestre atípico". Pedro Garcia, diretor de marketing da operadora portuguesa, lembra que durante os dois meses mais agudos da pandemia apenas a Bielorrússia e a Nicarágua mantiveram as atividades desportivas. Também a Placard reconhece que a primeira metade do ano "foi fortemente afetada pela pandemia". Como recorda Tomás Gonçalves, diretor da casa da SAS Apostas Sociais, "a partir da segunda semana de março começaram a ser sucessivamente cancelados todos os eventos desportivos a nível global". Sem produto não há apostas.
Já em maio, com o regresso das competições, a Betano registou um aumento da atividade e recuperou algum terreno, mas "o semestre ficou afetado de forma definitiva" dada a interrupção dos jogos e o cancelamento do Euro 2020, frisa Ricardo Branquinho da Fonseca, diretor da marca. A Bet sentiu que o recomeço da Liga NOS, um dos campeonatos que maior interesse desperta junto dos seus apostadores, alavancou o volume de apostas desportivas da casa, mas, ainda assim, não permitiu ao negócio respirar. "Nem todas as competições prosseguiram, sobretudo porque apenas no fim de julho voltou a NBA, as principais competições de ténis também ainda não arrancaram, e tivemos apenas dois meses de campeonatos de futebol", lembra Pedro Garcia. Na Bet, o futebol vale 80% do volume de apostas.
As expectativas de retoma da atividade estão agora voltadas para o início dos campeonatos de futebol, mas sem grandes ilusões. A Bet espera voltar aos níveis de janeiro e fevereiro deste ano, quando a operação estava a registar um crescimento. "Quero acreditar que a nova temporada desportiva irá arrancar e que com a sua chegada iremos estabilizar o volume de apostas, talvez não chegando aos valores do início do ano, mas o suficiente para equilibrar a balança". A Betano admite que não irá atingir os objetivos propostos para o exercício, mas o segundo semestre do ano "é essencial para recuperarmos terreno".
Gonçalo Sousa, diretor de marketing da Nossa Aposta, está otimista quanto a uma retoma na segunda metade do ano, mas reconhece que "enquanto a pandemia estiver presente dificilmente tudo voltará à normalidade". Como sublinha, "a proibição de adeptos nos estádios, a alteração de formatos de competições, entre outras coisas, acaba por desvirtuar um pouco o que é o desporto como o conhecemos".
Jogo desigual
A impossibilidade legal de explorar eSports ou Virtual Sports no país também não ajudou a segurar as receitas da atividade. Para a Betano, essa oferta "teria feito toda a diferença" no período do confinamento desportivo para compensar as perdas. Também a Bet defende que a única forma de impedir quebras nas apostas seria o alargamento do pipeline de jogos. Segundo Pedro Garcia, esses mercados "são apenas oferecidos por empresas ilegais", que também operam em Portugal e "assim têm mais ferramentas do que os operadores legais para trabalhar". A Betano segue a mesma linha: melhorar a oferta de produtos ajudaria a que os apostadores tivessem menos razões para recorrer ao jogo ilegal.
A batalha do setor contra o jogo online ilegal tem várias frentes. Para Tomás Gonçalves, o combate a essas operadoras terá de passar pela restrição dos meios de pagamento e dos meios de publicidade. "Estes operadores utilizam os habituais meios de pagamento disponíveis nos países em que operam, e é cada vez mais recorrente utilizarem também meios de publicidade lícitos como outdoors, táxis, internet, em alguns casos utilizando até imagens de figuras públicas para se promoverem", frisa. A Betano também sugere um diálogo com a Google para que seja bloqueada a indexação de operadores ilegais nos motores de busca. A Nossa Aposta frisa, por sua vez, que "é incrível como operadores ilegais conseguem oferecer métodos de depósito exclusivamente portugueses".
Os números da operação do primeiro semestre do jogo online em Portugal ainda não foram revelados e as operadoras não divulgam individualmente. Sabe-se que no primeiro trimestre as receitas brutas (valor que resulta do abate dos prémios ao total das apostas) da atividade em Portugal atingiram os 69,8 milhões de euros, um aumento de 47,5% face ao período homólogo de 2019. O volume de apostas desportivas totalizou 149,1 milhões, uma quebra de 19,5% em relação ao trimestre anterior, mas um aumento de 13,5% quando comparado com o homólogo de 2019.
